The Mother, Part 1
There are two powers that alone can effect in their conjunction
the
great and difficult thing which is the aim of our endeavour, a
fixed
and unfailing aspiration that calls from below and a supreme Grace
from above that answers. But the supreme Grace will act only in the conditions of the Light and the Truth; it will not act in conditions laid upon it by the Falsehood and the Ignorance. For if it were to yield to the demands of the Falsehood, it would defeat its own purpose.
These are the conditions of the Light and Truth, the sole conditions under which the highest Force will descend; and it is only the very highest supramental Force descending from above and opening from below that can victoriously handle the physical Nature and annihilate its difficulties .... There must be a total and sincere surrender; there must be an exclusive self-opening to the divine Power; there must be a constant and integral choice of the Truth that is descending, a constant and integral rejection of the falsehood of the mental, vital and physical Powers and Appearances that still rule the earth Nature.
The surrender must be total and seize all the parts of the being. It is not enough that the psychic should respond and the higher mental accept or even the inner vital submit and the inner physical consciousness feel the influence. There must be in no part of the being, even the most external, anything that makes a reserve, anything that hides behind doubts, confusions and subterfuges, anything that revolts or refuses.
If part of the being surrenders, but another part reserves itself, follows its own way or makes its own conditions, then each time that that happens, you are yourself pushing the divine Grace away from you.
If behind your devotion and surrender you make a cover for your desires, egoistic demands and vital insistences, if you put these things in place of the true aspiration or mix them with it and try to impose them on the Divine Shakti, then it is idle to invoke the divine Grace to transform you.
If you open yourself on one side or in one part to the Truth and on another side are constantly opening the gates to hostile forces, it is vain to expect that the divine Grace will abide with you. You must keep the temple clean if you wish to instal there the living Presence.
If each time the Power intervenes and brings in the Truth, you turn your back on it and call in again the falsehood that has been expelled, it is not the divine Grace that you must blame for failing you, but the falsity of your own will and the imperfection of your own surrender.
If you call for the Truth and yet something in you chooses what is false, ignorant and undivine or even simply is unwilling to reject it altogether, then always you will be open to attack and the Grace will recede from you. Detect first what is false or obscure in you and persistently reject it, then alone can you rightly call for the divine Power to transform you.
Do not imagine that truth and falsehood, light and darkness, surrender and selfishness can be allowed to dwell together in the house consecrated to the Divine. The transformation must be integral, and integral therefore the rejection of all that withstands it.
Reject the false notion that the divine Power will do and is bound to do everything for you at your demand and even though you do not satisfy the conditions laid down by the Supreme. Make your surrender true and complete, then only will all else be done for you.
Reject too the false and indolent expectation that the divine Power will do even the surrender for you. The Supreme demands your surrender to her, but does not impose it: you are free at every moment, till the irrevocable transformation comes, to deny and to reject the Divine or to recall your self-giving, if you are willing to suffer the spiritual consequence. Your surrender must be self-made and free; it must be the surrender of a living being, not of an inert automaton or mechanical tool.
An inert passivity is constantly confused with the real surrender, but out of an inert passivity nothing true and powerful can come. It is the inert passivity of physical Nature that leaves it at the mercy of every obscure or undivine influence. A glad and strong and helpful submission is demanded to the working of the Divine Force, the obedience of the illumined disciple of the Truth, of the inner Warrior who fights against obscurity and falsehood, of the faithful servant of the Divine.
This is the true attitude and only those who can take and keep it, preserve a faith unshaken by disappointments and difficulties and shall pass through the ordeal to the supreme victory and the great transmutation.

The Symbol Dawn
IT WAS the hour before the God’s awake.
Across the path of the divine Event
The huge forboding mind of
Night alone,
In her unlit temple of eternity,
Lay stretched immobile upon Silence’ marge.
Almost one felt, opaque,
impenetrable,
In the sombre symbol of her
eyeless muse
The abysm of the unbodied
Infinite;
A fathomless zero occupied the
world.
A power of fallen boundless self
awake
Between the first and the last
Nothingness,
Recalling the tenebrous womb
from which it came,
Turned from the insoluble
mystery of birth
And the tardy process of
mortality
And longed to reach its end in
vacant Nought.
As in a dark beginning of all
things,
A mute featureless semblance of all
things,
A mute featureless semblance of
the Unknown
repeating for ever the
unconscious act,
Prolonging for ever the unseeing
will,
Cradled the cosmic drowse of
ignorant Force
Whose moved creative slumber
kindles the suns
And carries our lives in its
somnabulist whirl.
Athwart the vain enormous
trance of Space,
Its formless stupor without mind
or life,
A shadow spinning through a
soulless Void,
Thrown back once more into unthinking dreams,
Earth wheeled abandoned in the
hollow gulfs
Forgetful of her spirit and her
fate.
The impassive skies were
neutral, empty, still.
Then something in the
inscrutable darkness stirred;
A nameless movement, an
unthought Idea
Insistent, dissatisfied, without an aim,
Something that wished but knew
not how to be,
Teased the Inconscient to wake
Ignorance.
A throe that came and left a
quivering trace,
Gave room for an old tired want
unfilled,
At peace in its subconscient
moonless cave
To raise its head and look for
absent light,
Straining closed eyes of vanished
memory,
Like one who searches for a by gone self
And only meets the corpse of his
desire.
It was as though even in this
Nought’s profound,
Even in this ultimate
dissolution core,
There lurked an unremembering entity,
Survivor of a slain and buried
past
Condemned to resume the effort
and the pang,
Reviving in another frustrate
world.
An unshaped consciousness
desired light
And a blank prescience yearned
towards distant change.
As if a childlike finger laid on a
cheek
Reminded of the endless need in things
The heedless Mother of the
universe,
An infant longing clutched the
sombre Vast, Insensibly somewhere a breach began:
A long lone line of hesitating hue
like a vague smile tempting a
desert heart
Troubled the far rim of life’s
obscure sleep.
Arrived from the other side of
boundlessness
An eye of deity peered through
the dumb deeps;
A scout in a reconnaissance from
the sun,
I seemed amid a heavy cosmic
rest,
The torpor of a sick and weary
world, To seek for a spirit sole and
desolate
Too fallen to recollect forgotten
bliss.
Intervening in a mindless universe,
Its message crept through the
reluctant hush
calling the adventure of
consciousness and joy
And, conquering Nature’s
disillusioned breast,
Compelled renewed consent to
see and feel.
A thought was sown in the
unsounded Void,
A sense was born within the
darkness’ depths,
A memory quivered in the heart
of Time
As if a soul long dead were
moved to live:
But the oblivion that succeeds
the fall,
Had blotted the crowded tablets
of the past,
And all that was destroyed must
be rebuilt
And old experience laboured out
once more.
All can be done if the god-touch
is there.
A hope stole in that hardly dared
to be
Amid the Night’s forlorn
indifference.
As if solicited in an alien world
with timid and hazardous instinctive grace,

Author’s Note
The tale of Satyavan and Savitri is recited in the Mahabharata as a story of conjugal love conquering death. But this legend is, as shown by many features of the human tale, one of the many symbolic myths of the Vedic cycle. Satyavan is the soul carrying the divine truth of being within itself but descended into the grip of death and ignorance; Savitri is the Divine Word, daughter of the Sun, goddess of the supreme Truth who comes down and is born to save; Aswapati, the Lord of the Horse, her human father is the Lord of Tapasya, the concentrated energy of spiritual endeavor that helps us to rise from the mortal to the immortal planes; Dyumatsena, Lord of the Shining Hosts, father of Satavan, is the Divine Mind here fallen blind, losing its celestial kingdom of vision, and through
that loss its kingdom of glory. Still this is not a mere allegory, the characters
are not personified qualities, but incarnations or emanations of living and conscious Forces with whom we can enter into concrete touch and they take human bodies in order to help man and show him the way from his mortal state to a divine consciousness and immortal life.

In Beloved Kranti Sangivane ‘INFINITE’ one sees Sri Aurobindo’s
poem Savitri come to life.
In an exposition on Sri Aurobindo’s poem Savitri http://www.scribd.com/doc/13765809/Meaning-of-Birth-and-Quest-in-Sri-Aurobindos-Savitri one sees :
But this birth is no freak event; it is the fruition of a long and unending labour, an
unending recurrence going on forever in the heart of life. Even as it descends from above,
it is at the same time an actualisation of a Will hidden in matter’s core. Coeval with earth
and contemptuously dismissive of time, fate and death, this Will yet awaits its hour of
coming:
Although our fallen minds forget to climb,
Although our human stuff resists or breaks,
She keeps her will that hopes to divinise clay;
Once more that Will put on an earthly shape. (354)
Not only in her origins but in her form as well, Savitri is so unlike man’s earthly
phenomenal being. Even in her birth and early years, she is conscious of her transcendent
source, and though living aloof and content, her being is continuously flooded with “slow
conscient light” and heavenly intimacies:
